The Fresnel lantern, the big brass thing, is a
real Marine Anchor lamp. I think it's quite old.
It was rigged to run a car headlamp bulb off a
battery, so it could be carried wireless. The
Magistrate of Jaynestown uses it when he lets
Stitch go. It appears in the deck cages on
Serenity's cargo deck from time to time.
The other lantern was made by the Prop Dept. out
of an industrial light fitting, the kind used at
sea and in factories. The orange colour is
acheived by wrapping the glass with a piece of
lighting gel, used by the Studio lighting
technicians to change the colour of lights on set.
