Welcome to the Firefly Archive, the online museum of props and costumes from Joss Whedon's 'Firefly'.
I'd like to warmly welcome all fans of this remarkable show. Whether you're a Browncoat of long standing, or you've only just discovered the coat you got on sale is 'kind of a brownish colour', stay and look around.
The Archive was set up to document the work of a group of very talented (and in some cases, deranged) storytellers who collaborated to produce what is arguably some of the best Television ever made.
Firefly had never aired in England. On a random day in 2003 I was mooching around my local Woolworths in ever decreasing circles, when a boxed set of DVDs caught my eye. It said: From Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy and Angel....A very funny, very hip, very terrific Sci-Fi show.
The other thing it said was £15.99 Though never much of a gambling man, I judged the odds to be in my favour and took a punt.
Good bet. I watched the whole thing from beginning to end. Charmed by its wit, clever warmth and irreverence. Brilliant characters with lives behind them. Real stories about real people and their trouble and strife. Us in space.
I began to look for artefacts from the show. I'm a working guy, not an eccentric millionaire (unless I'm so eccentric I just don't know it) and so each of the items in the collection has its own story. Many I chased doggedly, sometimes for years, until the original owner wore down to the point where he'd sell just to get rid of me. I think it safe to say that pretty much every spare penny I've had is invested here, in this odd collection of items. Sometimes the smallest and most apparently pointless object has the most interesting story. It's a Firefly thing.
As the collection began to grow in size and weirdness, I became aware that there were many, many other Browncoats out there. Knowing what kindly souls they tend to be, I decided to divest them of their hard earned cash in the name of charity. The collection is displayed to the public as often as my work schedule will allow. It has graced venues from the Alliance-sized Memorabilia show at the NEC in Birmingham, the National Space Centre and the small, but perfectly formed, X-wing Fundraiser out on the Rim, in Honiton. The collection has not yet made it across the Pond to the USA, but I have high hopes it will. Titan books featured many of the pieces in their two volume 'Firefly Offical Companion' books, which have been warmly received by fans of the show worldwide.
To date, the collection has taken a hand in raising many thousands of Pounds for charities such as the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research.
We are always on the lookout for items from the show, so don't be shy if you have something cool or know of something somewhere which needs a good home. Also, if you are organising an event which you'd like the collection to come to, contact us.
Above all, enjoy your visit.
Keep the faith,
Badger
